Spider Bite Emergency

Most spider bites cause minor irritation, but bites from black widows or brown recluses can be dangerous and require immediate veterinary care.

Signs & Symptoms
  • Localized swelling and redness
  • Pain at bite site
  • Two small puncture marks
  • Muscle pain or cramping (black widow)
  • Skin discoloration or necrosis (brown recluse)
  • Fever or chills
  • Weakness or trembling
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Excessive drooling
  • Vomiting
What To Do
  1. 1Try to identify the spider if safely possible
  2. 2Clean the bite area with mild soap and water
  3. 3Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling (wrapped in cloth)
  4. 4Keep your pet calm and restrict movement
  5. 5Monitor for worsening symptoms
