CRITICAL URGENCY

Seizures

Uncontrolled muscle activity, convulsions, or loss of consciousness

  • Falling over or collapsing
  • Stiffening of muscles
  • Jerking or paddling movements
  • Drooling or foaming at mouth
  • Loss of bladder/bowel control
  • Confusion before or after
What To Do
  1. 1Note the time - duration matters for treatment
  2. 2Clear the area of objects that could hurt your pet
  3. 3Do NOT restrain your pet or put anything in their mouth
  4. 4Speak calmly and softly
  5. 5Dim lights and reduce noise
  6. 6After seizure, keep dog warm and calm
What NOT To Do
  • Don't put your hands near their mouth
  • Don't try to hold them down
  • Don't give food or water during or right after
  • Don't panic - most seizures end on their own
Seek Veterinary Care When
  • Seizure lasts more than 5 minutes
  • Multiple seizures in 24 hours
  • First-time seizure
  • Dog doesn't recover within 30 minutes
  • Seizure occurs in water
