CRITICAL URGENCY

Snake Bite Emergency

Snake bites can be life-threatening. Quick action is essential, especially if the snake is venomous.

Signs & Symptoms
  • Puncture wounds (may be hard to see through fur)
  • Rapid swelling at bite site
  • Extreme pain and whimpering
  • Weakness or collapse
  • Drooling or difficulty breathing
  • Dilated pupils
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Muscle tremors or paralysis
  • Bleeding from bite or gums
What To Do
  1. 1Keep your pet calm and still - movement spreads venom faster
  2. 2Carry your pet if possible - do not let them walk
  3. 3Keep the bite site below heart level
  4. 4Remove collar if bitten on neck (swelling can restrict breathing)
  5. 5Note the time of the bite
  6. 6If safe, try to identify or photograph the snake (do NOT chase it)
  7. 7Call your vet or emergency clinic immediately while en route
