CRITICAL URGENCY

Bird Toxin Exposure

Birds are extremely sensitive to airborne and ingested toxins

Signs & Symptoms
  • Sudden collapse or death (non-stick cookware fumes)
  • Labored breathing or wheezing
  • Seizures or tremors
  • Vomiting or regurgitation
  • Weakness, falling off perch
  • Disorientation or loss of balance
What To Do
  1. 1Remove bird from the area immediately
  2. 2Move to fresh air
  3. 3Identify the toxin source if possible
  4. 4Call avian vet or poison control immediately
  5. 5Keep bird warm and calm
What NOT To Do
  • Don't use non-stick (PTFE/Teflon) cookware near birds — fumes are fatal
  • Don't use scented candles, air fresheners, or aerosols near birds
  • Don't give any food or water until vet advises
  • Don't delay — birds can die within minutes of toxin exposure
Seek Veterinary Care When
  • Any suspected toxin exposure
  • Bird shows any symptoms after cooking or cleaning
  • Bird collapses or loses consciousness
  • Any respiratory distress
